Daniel Bowen’s real life Seabiscuit movie with At Witz End ahead of Kosciuszko in Weetwood Handicap

Daniel Bowen feels like he is in a real life Seabiscuit movie sometimes and has to pinch himself each time At Witz End raises the bar as a nine-year-old ahead of a potential million-dollar payday.

Golden Rose + Manikato Stakes + Grand Final? A weekend like no other!

Daniel Bowen reckons they could make a movie on his horse At Witz End if he manages to win The Kosciuszko next month and says Saturday’s Weetwood Handicap will serve as a vital stepping stone.

The nine-year-old has been drinking from the Fountain of Youth for Bowen since coming to his Lismore stables early this year and is in the form of his career as a nine-year-old.

Bowen likes to keep a low profile, but says what At Witz End has achieved in his short time with him has been nothing short of incredible and is a fairytale story of his own as he gears up for the $2m country-trained classic in three weeks time.

At Witz End has notched up almost $400,000 for his new connections since coming to Bowen’s stable, which could go to stratospheric levels should he do the Weetwood-Kosciuszko double.

“For a horse like him, with where he has come from and what he has done, it is a bit of a fairytale to be honest,” Bowen said.

“If he could win The Kosciuszko, it’d be something out of the Seabiscuit movie, that stuff doesn’t happen.

“For him to get to the rating he is at, at this age, it has been a revelation really, I just shake my head a bit.”

After seeing the horse first hand formerly being trained in the area, Bowen was always keen to get his hands on him and managed to drag in a couple of “battling” owners, who have been on the ride of a lifetime.

“They are real battlers, when they lob down there at Randwick for The Kosciuszko in their bag of fruit (suit), they won’t know what’s hit them — what a story,” Bowen laughed.

“It is already a fairytale, he is fit enough to run a race on Saturday so I couldn’t put it past him, he will improve into Sydney but.

“If he can win both, they’d just about make a movie, I am just grateful to be part of it.”

Drawing barrier 15 dented his chances on Saturday, but Bowen is buoyed by his win in the Listed ATC Cup at Caloundra during the winter where he did his best work being wide throughout on a wet track.

With the prospect of a rain affected surface at Toowoomba, Bowen said the same thing could happen.

“We went to Caloundra, he drew off the track there and it rained and up being the place to be, we ended up beating Yellow Brick and Freedom Rally that day,” he said.

At Witz End is a $23 chance in betting, while Yellow Brick retains favouritism at $3.70.
