On Saturday at Doomben, the little-known trainer had the last laugh when he landed a $101 knockout to take the lot and notch up his first metropolitan winner in the process.

Even jockey Taylor Marshall confessed the name Manwarring was a name he hadn’t seen in the formguide before.
“I have been training about three years,” Manwarring said.
“I was going to take her to Sydney for a Highway race, but it is a bit expensive to send them all the way there.
“I was giggling when we were driving up to Brisbane when she was $101, her work has been so good.”
As the sole owner of Credit Controller, Manwarring pocketed a cool $42,000 for his work on Saturday along with a tidy collect on the punt.
“I had to max out my credit card to buy her, $4000, I had some mates saying they would buy into her,” he said.
“You don’t need to have much on them at those odds, I had enough on her, that’s for sure.”
MAN WITH A PLAN
Jason Scott is the man with one of the hardest jobs in Australian racing.
The Racing Queensland boss was a breath of fresh air at the Asian Racing Conference in Japan during the week and put the amount of racing in Australia firmly on the agenda.
“Hong Kong is the most successful jurisdiction in the world and they race two times a week … we simply race too much,” he said on Thursday.
As the battle for the wagering dollar increases, Scott is mindful of the amount of racing going on in his own backyard, but is also mindful of the juggling act he faces, with the size of Queensland dictating a large amount of race meetings each week.
Queensland has 120 clubs scattered across the state, all who want their pound of flesh when it comes to race dates.
Country racing is largely a loss-maker for the bottom line, but is an important part of the fabric as a grassroots place for new participants to cut their teeth.
Queensland hosted nine of the 20 race meetings conducted across Australia on Saturday alone, next Saturday the Sunshine State will host nine of the 18 on the calendar.
Scott is a sharp wagering mind, but faces pressure from every side, with country racing somewhat of a political football.
He faces a political minefield, with a falling wagering dollar putting a strain on costs, but will also likely be met by firm government resistance if race meets disappear from the calendar in regional areas.
Any move would need long-term planning, with Queensland’s current bulging horse population requiring a robust calendar of racing.
