Golfers Aron Price and Robert Allenby bury hatchet after twitter feud

ARON Price says he is embarrassed by his role in a heated slanging match with fellow Aussie golf star Robert Allenby but the pair have since met up and made peace.

ARON Price says he is embarrassed by his role in a heated slanging match with fellow Aussie golf star Robert Allenby but the pair have since met up and made peace.

Price and Allenby are both in the field for the NSW Open at Stonecutters Ridge this week but an awkward locker room confrontation won’t be an issue after they spoke at a tournament in Fiji last month.

The two Aussie golf pros traded insults on Twitter in August after Price joked online that an interview with Allenby and controversial US swimmer Ryan Lochte would make good pay-per-view TV.

Allenby had been arrested for disorderly conduct outside a casino the previous week.

But Allenby fired back with insults about Price’s career, to which Price replied that Allenby was “f ... ing lost” and should see a psychiatrist.

Allenby suggested he was going to punch Price by posting an emoji fist and saying “see you soon”.

A regretful Price, who later deleted his tweets, said he’d been at a friend’s party and what started out as a joke had got out of hand.

“I saw him in Fiji, and I’d already apologised via text,” Price said.

“I’d had a few drinks and I think he had too. When I woke up the next day, even though a few people were having fun with it, I wasn’t happy with myself. I was a bit embarrassed. You don’t need to be airing your laundry publicly.”

Price learned a valuable lesson from the Twitter fight which drew worldwide headlines: don’t tweet.

“I am trying to stay off it. My wife is not a big fan of me tweeting after 8pm,” Price said. “I do enjoy some of it but people aren’t joking when they say that stuff can be dangerous.”

Allenby will play in the pro-am at Stonecutters Ridge on Wednesday and, after a lean year, look to use the tournament as a launch pad for next week’s Australian Open in Sydney and better form in the States next year.

Which is also what Price is aiming to do after a modest year. With a small family, he only played 12 tournaments after losing his Web.com tour card. Earning entry into the US Open via qualifying was the highlight.

Price, a Sydney boy who played on the US PGA Tour in 2009, won the 2013 NSW Open at Castle Hill and hopes to use his home event to relaunch his career.

“I was exempt into the final stage of European Q-school but I decided that next year I don’t need to be in Europe,” he said. “I have another baby coming, so I need to be in the States.

“I haven’t played this event since I won it, so I plan on getting the juices flowing and into the Australian Open and Australian PGA, and then back into the Web.com Q-school.

“It’s important to play well there and get my status back there and get back on the PGA Tour.”
