Australia’s Sam Kerr has been a member of Chelsea in the Women’s Super League after joining the team ahead of the second half of the 2019/20 season.

So Liverpool’s announcement blindsided fans with the post garnering more than six million views at the time of writing.

There was just one issue that went over the head of a plethora of fans … it was a different Sam Kerr.

It wasn’t the 31-year-old Australian who was joining the Reds, it was 25-year-old Scottish player Sam Kerr who was joining the English giants.

The video uploaded to Liverpool’s social media channels was captioned “Welcome to the Reds, Sam Kerr” with the video showing the Scottish midfielder signing and holding up her new jersey.

Despite the video evidence, fans were stumped by the upload.

One wrote on X: “Is she not playing for Chelsea?”

A second added: “For a second I was shocked.”

A third wrote: “Oh my heart dropped.”

A confused fan posted: “Isn’t she like the best player in the world??? F***ing boss signing for the Reds.”

Despite the mass confusion, Australia’s Sam Kerr isn’t departing Chelsea as the Matildas superstar continues her return from an ACL injury that has sidelined her since last January.

As fans had hoped a return would be drawing closer, Kerr was dealt a devastating setback in her program with Chelsea confirming she is not even training with teammates yet and remains on a modified recovery program.

“I would say Sam we are looking to maybe have back with us February, March, not before that,” the Chelsea boss said.

“She didn’t start yet to train, even being modified with the group, so she’s still on her individual process rehab and I think it will take at least two or three more months for her to be fit enough to be with the squad.”

It means Kerr will only return in time for the final few months before the Women’s Super League season wraps up in May.

While Kerr hasn’t been able to have an impact on the field, off the field she has been kicking goals with partner Kristie Mewis.

In a cute Instagram post, the pair announced that Mewis was pregnant with their baby due in 2025.

Kerr posted a series of black and white snaps, two with the pair kissing, another with her and Mewis holding an ultrasound picture and another revealing Mewis’ swollen stomach.

The baby news came a year after the pair announced their engagement, two months after rumours initially swirled about the move.

Kerr and Mewis went public with their relationship in 2021 after the Tokyo Olympics and since then the power couple have regularly shared snaps together.
