Former NRL star Jarryd Hayne has jetted off to Perth for a six-month missionary course amid sexual assault allegations hanging over his head.
Hayne brushed off reporters as he boarded his flight in Sydney on Saturday afternoon.
The ex-Parramatta and Gold Coast back will complete daily prayers, chores and worship at the evangelical Christian centre Youth With A Mission, on the fringe of Perth’s CBD.
Asked by reporters how important the trip was and if he was looking forward to getting away from Sydney, Hayne replied: “You guys are kidding aren’t you.
“Leave me alone, seriously. Go away. What do you want?
“I’m not going to say anything about the trip. Seriously, this is a joke.”

Hayne also declined to comment to The Sunday Telegraph about his missionary course in Perth.
Asked if it was tough, he said: “I had to say goodbye to my daughter.”
Hayne will stand trial in the District Court over two charges of aggravated sexual assault inflicting actual bodily harm in relation to the alleged rape of a woman in the Hunter Region last September.
Hayne has denied the allegations.
He will next appear in Newcastle Local Court on July 25.
