The 30 most popular pre-season KFC SuperCoach selections

The results are in, and it seems SuperCoach players can’t agree on which premium defender to pick. And the most popular selection in the game is yet to play a home-and-away game.

Richmond one-game wonder Marlion Pickett ($123,900, MID) is the most selected player in KFC SuperCoach with a month until Round 1.

The 28-year-old is a gift for SuperCoaches considering his 96-point Grand Final debut isn’t factored into his starting price, and 67 per cent of teams have jumped on.

It means he is at a bargain basement price – the same as a draftee selected outside the first round – and is set to make us a truckload of cash this season.

SuperCoaches are more than willing to pay top dollar for the game’s most-expensive player Brodie Grundy ($705,900, RUCK) who has the second-highest ownership. The SuperCoach beast has finished as the top-scoring player in both of the past two seasons.

Gold Coast cash cows Matt Rowell ($207,300, MID) and Izak Rankine ($123,900, FWD) have squeezed into the top-five most popular players, with both set to be unleashed by coach Stuart Dew in Round 1.

Meanwhile, new SuperCoach forwards Lachie Whitfield ($604,100, FWD/MID) and Dustin Martin ($543,000, FWD/MID) are likely to be locked and loaded as F1 and F2 in most teams with each sitting in more than 55 per cent of squads.

The major mover since SuperCoach opened on January 21 is Max Gawn ($697,100, RUCK), who suffered a medial ligament strain on the Demons’ pre-season camp.

The Dees still expect the bearded giant to be fit to play in Round 1, but SuperCoaches want to see proof in the Marsh Community Series.

Gawn was selected by 51 per cent of SuperCoach Stats users in the pre-season

– now he is in just 31 per cent of teams.

Docker Stephen Hill ($190,600, DEF/FWD) is currently the most popular defender in SuperCoach, which is something we wouldn’t have expected six months ago.

Returning Blue Sam Docherty ($436,100, DEF) is priced favourably after two consecutive knee reconstructions and has been selected by more than half of teams, sharing the same ownership percentage as teammate Patrick Cripps (51 per cent).

As far as premiums go, there are options aplenty in defence and SuperCoaches are seemingly unsure who to pick.

Swan Jake Lloyd ($591,400, DEF) and Zac Williams ($551,700, DEF) are the only premium defenders in the top-30 most popular picks.

It is also unusual to see Patrick Dangerfield ($625,500, MID) so low on the list – the cost of losing his prized dual-position status.
