AFL teams: All the ins and outs for Round 14

Essendon has made mass changes to face Hawthorn, with ruckman Sam Draper among those returning from injury. SEE THE FULL TEAMS

Essendon has confirmed a sixth change for Sunday’s crunch clash with Hawthorn in Launceston as the Bombers desperately try to stay in touch with the top-eight.

Ruckman Andrew Phillips has been dropped, making way for fellow big man Peter Wright.

Wright will make his return from a calf injury that has sidelined him for the past two matches.

Phillips joins Andrew McGrath (knee), David Zaharakis (hamstring), Aaron Francis (personal reasons), Alec Waterman (calf) and Patrick Ambrose (omitted) on the list of outs.

Ruckman Sam Draper will play his first game since Round 2 after overcoming a syndesmosis injury, while forward Devon Smith returns from a hamstring injury.

Brandon Zerk-Thatcher and Ned Cahill have also been included in this week’s side.

Mid-season draftee Sam Durham and last week’s medical substitute Ambrose are two of the four emergencies, from which the medical substitute will be selected.

Hawthorn has confirmed only two changes to its starting 22 for the match, with Lachlan Bramble and James Cousins replacing James Worpel (suspension) and Harry Morrison (hamstring).

Last week’s medical substitute Josh Morris is again one of the club’s four emergencies.

In other teams news, Carlton has dropped Marc Murphy for its clash against GWS. Matt Cottrell, Jack Newnes and Will Setterfield are also out.

Meanwhile, veteran Giants defender Phil Davis is primed to play his first AFL game in more than two months against Carlton on Saturday night after making a successful VFL return.

Davis’s first assignment could be trying to stop Coleman Medal frontrunner Harry McKay, who has kicked 38 goals in 12 games.

Coach Leon Cameron said striking the right balance in defence was important, given the Blues also have dangerous small forwards in Zac Fisher and Eddie Betts who need close checking.

“We always wanted (Davis) to train three or four weeks and play a game then start to consider him, because it’s just not fair on him,” Cameron said on Thursday.

“He’s played only two games in 12 months, really (after a knee injury ended his season last year), but his performance was pretty good, so if he trains well today he’s going to be putting his hand up.”

“They (Greene, de Boer and Kennedy) were a little bit off their tucker coming back from long stints, so no doubt they’ll be better for the run,” Cameron said.

“There’s a fine line with the dynamics of the team with some young kids who’ve been so good in the first half of the year, with some returning veterans or players who’ve been around for our footy club.

“Any club wants selection headaches and we probably haven’t had that in the first half of the year.

“If that’s coming in the next three or four games, then it comes back on the coaches and that’s only but a good thing.”
