AFL mid-season draft 2021: Latest news, moves and bolters

Essendon will enter the mid-season draft armed with two selections. Find out who they and a host of other clubs could pick.

REPLAY: Mock AFL mid-season draft

Essendon will enter Wednesday night’s mid-season rookie draft armed with two selections, with All-Australian defender Michael Hurley accepting a move onto the club’s inactive list.

Hurley’s ongoing recovery from a serious hip infection that saw him drop more than 10kg led to Bombers officials effectively shelving plans for him to play this year.

They already had one list vacancy but now have the option of adding two players to their impressive list of 23-and-under talent that’s surprisingly propelled them to the verge of the top eight.

The Bombers are linked to various nominees, including interviewing Norwood key forward Jackson Callow, who has a number of suitors before Essendon’s No. 10 pick.

Others mentioned as possible targets are VFL Bomber Angus Baker, Murray Bushranger Cameron McLeod, GWS Giants Academy player James Peatling and Gold Coast Academy member Max Pescud.

As expected, Hawthorn also opened a second list spot by designating James Sicily to the inactive list.

The Hawks are tipped to select Oakleigh Chargers ruckman Ned Moyle with the No. 2 pick and hope to add Box Hill midfielder Jai Newcombe in the second round.

Brisbane has also placed 2017 No. 1 draft pick Cam Rayner (knee) on the inactive list to create a list opening that gives it the option of picking someone.

Rivals believe a mature-age ruckman would be the likeliest option for the contending Lions, who are thin at the position behind Oscar McInerney and Archie Smith.

Their other genuine big man, Henry Smith, is in his first AFL season.

However, like the Giants, who lost Lachie Keeffe for the season with an ACL rupture, they may not use their selection.

Geelong and Collingwood are also weighing up their options a day out from the mid-season draft.

The Cats currently have no vacancies, but can get involved if they shift hard-luck midfielder Cooper Stephens onto the inactive list after he underwent ankle surgery last week.

The Magpies were set to make two picks in the mid-season draft and may take three players, depending on whether they send Tyler Brown in for season-ending shoulder surgery.

They see this week’s draft as an opportunity to make up for the shortfall in the November edition, where they will match a bid for father-son prospect and likely No. 1 pick Nick Daicos.

The draft points required to secure Daicos will likely leave Collingwood with only back-end selections after that as the club tries to resurrect its fortunes.

Both teams need to make their call before the 5pm AEST deadline on Tuesday.

STENGLE’S MID-SEASON DRAFT HOPES DOWN TO ONE CLUB

Marc McGowan

Tyson Stengle’s hopes of a mid-season AFL lifeline appear to rest on whether reigning premier Richmond is willing to take him back.

The ex-Tigers and Crows small forward has been linked with a return to Punt Rd but also with Collingwood, which is believed to have cooled on the idea of recruiting him.

More than 600 players have nominated for Wednesday night’s AFL mid-season rookie draft, but Stengle remains one of the most intriguing.

Richmond’s recruiting team was among those on hand to watch Stengle kick three goals and gather 21 disposals for the SANFL’s representative team against the WAFL a fortnight ago.

He requested a trade from the Tigers to Adelaide three years ago in search of greater opportunity, but the Crows sacked him in March after three off-field indiscretions last season.

Stengle, 22, has since been playing for Woodville-West Torrens, where he’s kicked 11 goals in six SANFL games and averaged 97 SuperCoach points.

The Magpies are likely to instead swoop on athletic Sturt forward Ash Johnson or Norwood contested-marking beast Jackson Callow at pick 3.

They have also shown interest in Eastern Ranges’ 197cm ruck-forward Aiden Begg, who is out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.

Sandringham ruckman Jacob Edwards will join North Melbourne with the No. 1 pick, while Hawthorn is tipped to draft another big man, Ned Moyle, of Oakleigh Chargers.

They are considered the cream of the mid-season crop, and their stocks have risen so much they would have been taken in this year’s national draft after previously being overlooked.

The Hawks are also set to grab Box Hill midfielder Jai Newcombe, assuming they place James Sicily on the inactive list to create a second list vacancy.

If Hawthorn passes on Moyle, it’s expected one of Adelaide or Gold Coast would snap him up, but he’s unlikely to fall beyond pick 2.

The Crows’ selection depends on what happens in front of them, but they could look at Moyle, Johnson, Callow or even Tasmanian midfielder Oliver Davis, who joined their SANFL side as a development player.

At pick 5, the Suns are likely to pick either Johnson or a ruckman, with Southport and former Essendon rookie Fraser Thurlow emerging as a ready-made option.

Their interest in Norwood big man and ex-Swan Michael Knoll is understood to have fallen through after medical testing, but former AFL footballer Wylie Buzza – now at Werribee – is another possibility.

Fraser Thurlow has emerged as a mid-season draft bolter.

Carlton has opened up two list vacancies and is primed to secure 210cm project ruckman Alexander Mirkov at No.6.

Mirkov received an exemption to be eligible for the mid-season draft, after not nominating for last year’s national draft.

Fremantle, West Coast, Geelong, Brisbane and Western Bulldogs are the only teams without a list spot, but all clubs have until Tuesday to create more openings via a player retiring or being placed on the inactive list.

Other prospects in the mix include Max Heath, Sam Durham, Josh Green – brother of Giants onballer Tom – Angus Baker, Zavier Maher, ex-Crow Riley Knight and Kye Declase.
