Some of the AFL’s talent pathway clubs are often described as ‘footy factories’.

But it seems that some elite private schools could also lay claim to such a description.

An analysis of the 87 of this year’s top AFL draft prospects shows that 68 hail from private schools, compared to only 19 from public schools.

The private schools include independent, Catholic and Christian schools across the country.

The list of the top schools to produce 2023 draft prospects is headed by Sacred Heart College in Adelaide, which had four players invited to the national draft combine and one player invited to the state draft combine.

Fellow top Adelaide school Prince Alfred College has four draft prospects this year, while Caulfield Grammar in Melbourne also has four.

Perth’s Scotch College is the only other school with more than two top draft prospects, with its list of three students including top-five chance Daniel Curtin.

Some draft prospects graduated last year, but their high schools have still been recorded on this list rather than their university for those not doing higher education.

Data on schools was not available for all draft prospects who attended national and state draft combines this year but was sourced for 87 of the 100 players to feature in the 2023 Draft Dossier.
