What do you buy the woman who truly has it all?

SHE’S been gifted a puppy, cowboy hats and shoes, and had wax figures cast in her honour. So what does Meghan Markle get Kate Middleton for her 36th birthday, asks Katy Hall.

Meghan breaks the rules with her messy bun

TWO months into her engagement with Prince Harry, Meghan Markle now faces her latest challenge: buying her soon-to-be sister-in-law a birthday gift.

And while most of us mere mortals could go down the well-trodden route of having a bunch of flowers delivered or getting some reasonably priced earrings — both options which are sadly inappropriate in this instance given that the Duchess of Cambridge — who turned 36 on Wednesday — is handed countless posies every time she leaves the house and that the Royal Family’s jewellery collection is the stuff of legend — this makes things a little trickier to navigate. Because mortals, Kate and Meghan are not.

So what do you buy a woman has literally everything?

A country estate is out, as she’s already got several. A camera to shoot candid shots of her growing family is also off the list given she has one of the best DSLRs on the market and her photos are often released in lieu of official portraits.

She’s already been gifted a puppy and once received several pairs of shoes from the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Cowboy hats have been received on royal tours and wax figures have been cast in her honour.

Hell, she even owns a tandem bicycle thanks to Boris Johnson and an original recording of Stevie Wonder’s You and I by the late George Michael.

At this point, it seems like maternity leggings are really the only thing missing from Kate’s life.

If rumours are to be believed, Meghan did give the royal birthday bonanza a crack last year, gifting Kate a dream journal in which she could recount what had kept her tossing and turning in her gilt four-poster bed the night before and begin to identify any patterns that emerged.

In theory, seems like a nice idea, but in practice, one does wonder, when you’re a future Queen of England, have a husband and two healthy children at home(s), and a deliriously high approval rating from the public, what is it that one actually dreams about? Hasn’t everything been realised?

Having faced the same predicament for the past seven years himself, it’s possible Meghan called on Prince Harry for help, but as a former lifestyle blogger, buying a great gift for the friend who has everything is surely a dilemma the actor prides herself on having a unique solution to.

But following this week’s successful outing in London, it’s obvious what Meghan will gift Kate: a how-to guide on perfecting the messy bun. If that doesn’t do the trick, God only knows what will.
