The dream of owning your own plot of land, unit or house in the Far North could be within reach more easily than you think. Take a look at 40 of the region’s best bargains.

GETTING a foot on the property ladder can seem more like a nightmare than the Great Australian Dream, but there’s plenty of affordable home options out here.

It’s also about what you spend and where.

As the old saying goes, “it’s not where you start out but where you finish”.

For example, $85,000 can buy you a one bedroom, one bathroom 28 sqm unit in Woree, a 678 sqm block of land at Babinda or it could be a deposit on a more pricey property.

Re/Max Cairns agent Billy Clarke said buying a modest property is a good place to begin.

Mr Clarke who is marketing a one bedroom, one bathroom 42 sqm unit at 29/259 Sheridan St, Cairns North, said units are ”a great stepping stone.”

“If you are new to the market or a young person starting out buying a home can be quite challenging,” he said.

“If you cannot afford that $400,000 to $500,000 house then starting off more modestly is the way to go, particularly with interest rates so low.”

The Industry Real Estate lead agent Taylor Foster said the Cairns market was very competitive.

“Generally, with all our properties we will see between three and four offers,” he said.

“Cairns still holds good affordability, particularly for southern buyers and for locals there is still money to be made in the future.”
