THE tradition of an infamous nude fun run held in the middle of the night at a remote Cape York mining town has been brought back to life after a hiatus lasting 21 years.
Held in Weipa, the Running of the Bulls charity fun run is timed to coincide with the first storm of the wet season and raises money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
There were plans to resurrect the bare-all bash in 2011 after it was disbanded in 2000 when founder Nigel Gould left Weipa, but there were objections from police.
The event was first run in 1993.
Organiser Sasha Busch said about 30 people took part in 2km dash in the early hours of Sunday morning.
“Just growing up here it was a tradition and unique to Weipa and a few of us thought it would be a great idea to start it back up again,” she said.
“And it’s good fundraiser for RFDS and that’s important to us living remotely.”
Event founder Mr Gould, excited about the Running of the Bulls revival, said he had fielded international inquiries about the nocturnal novelty.
“(The town) was disappointed when it finished,” he said.
“The tourism dollars will (start) to come in and the whole town will get behind it.”
Ms Busch said to date $1000 had been raised for the RFDS and cash was still rolling in.
