Byron Bay hinterland property for sale at Coorabell
A Coorabell property with views of Cape Byron Lighthouse caught a bus driver’s eye more than half a century ago. Now it’s listed for sale for the first time since he bought it.

A stunning rural property that overlooks Cape Byron Lighthouse has hit the market for the first time in more than 50 years.
No price has been listed for the Coorabell property, which is perched atop St Helena on Coolamon Scenic Drive.
Adam Mangleson from Chincogan Real Estate said while it might sound like a cliche, the sale was genuinely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
“You won’t see this type of property come up for sale again,” he said.
The late Allan Wilton thought so too; he was doing the bus run when he flagged his interest with the previous owner back in the 1970s.
“The Wilton family had the bus run at the time and he would do the bus run past that property and it obviously always caught his eye,” Mr Mangleson said.
“One day he saw the owner there and pulled up out the front and said ‘if you ever want to sell it, make sure you let me know’.”
That conversation ultimately paid off for Mr Wilton and the property has been in his family since.
After his death, his children have opted to place it on the market.
The property has been running 50 head of cattle.
Mr Mangleson said there was serious interest in the sale.
“It’s definitely the most inquired on property we’ve had for sale recently,” he said.
He said it was hard to define the value of the property, so the vendors had left offers open.
“There are several parties looking further into it and we’re expecting it to come to a resolution,” he said.
He said the “usability” of the 50ha block set it apart from others in the area.
“A lot of those other properties along that ridge sort of have gone to people that maybe didn’t respect the land a lot,” he said.
“This property has been very well-managed for the half a century these guys have had it and obviously all the time before that.”
The property has views over the ocean, Cape Byron Lighthouse and hinterland.
Mr Mangleson said he was aware of an effort by community members to raise funds so the land could be purchased and turned into a reserve.
There are calls for 75,000 or more people to register to donate $200 each for the purchase of the land with the intention to turn it into a new reserve.
Mr Mangleson said there was “definitely serious interest” in the property.
“There are several local people looking at it; it’s not just out-of-town people looking at it,” he said.
He said prospective buyers had included people looking for “a lovely spot to call home” as well as “people connected to the tourism industry”.
The property sits on the east-northeast face of Coorabell Ridge and encompasses the lookout at the peak of St Helena.
There’s an original four-bedroom single-level home that captures stunning views of the area as well as a separate workshed.
Offers are set to close on November 1.
