THEY call it The Clucker and it is filled with signature buttermilk fried chicken, pickled onions and mayonnaise.
It is one of the sinfully delicious burgers on the menu at Burger Head in Penrith, which is fast making a name for itself for the best burger in town after winning the category in The Daily Telegraph’s Best of Sydney food awards.
Penrith is the surprise foodie hotspot to emerge from the awards, with local favourite High St Depot also taking out best breakfast for indulgences like coconut ice cream on strawberry covered French toast and buttermilk pancakes with apple maple sauce and blueberry mascarpone.
Readers were called on to nominate their favourite spots for breakfast, best burger, club food, pies, pizza and pub grub in honour of The Daily Telegraph’s Project Sydney celebration of our city via the Project Sydney website and on social media.
The public have voted and a panel of judges reviewed the most popular choices in the east, west, southwest and northern suburbs.
As perennial Aussie favourite, Best Pie is a prestigious win.
And the honour has overwhelmed the owners of Brooky Pies in Brookvale.
David and Nicole Landgrebe had to buy new equipment to keep up with the demand after being nominated. With the win announced during last month’s Project Sydney campaign, they had sold 500 pies per day for three days straight.
“We sold out three days in a row and had to work until midnight to open the next day,” Mrs Landgrebe said.
Mrs Landgrebe has had people travel as far as Cootamundra for their pies and is overjoyed people are taking the time out to see their shop.
Clovelly Bakery, Mountain High Pies and Appin Pies came out on top in their regional competitions.
Selections for breakfast included Berkelo at Brookvale, Brickfields at Chippendale and Black Elk at Carnes Hill and popular favourites in the burger category were Burgers by Josh in North Sydney, Bar Luca in Sydney’s East, and OJ’s Kitchen at Greenfield Park.
The Bankstown Sports Club’s Greenfield Bistro is an experience that goes beyond food _ securing its place as winner of best club food.
Visitors can take a seat in an authentic railway carriage before delving into culinary delights inspired from around the world and overseen by Bankstown Sports Club executive chef Helmut Gundendorfer.
Horizon’s in Mosman, Coogee Bay Hotel and Johnny’s Fongs in Mt Pritchard were also Best of Sydney club food highlights.
And if you’re looking for the best slice of pizza in town: Pizza Deli in Waterloo, Marciano’s in Lindfield, La Piazza in Bankstown and Bellazza Pizza in Menai came in as the peoples’ choice.
Best of Sydney food awards ambassador Katherine Gennusa said: “These awards show there is incredible food in all corners of Sydney, and with the nominations pouring on through The Daily Telegraph, how truly passionate locals about their favourite spot.”
