An eastern suburbs accountant filmed repeatedly hitting his wife has been given a chance to undergo counselling before he is sentenced, a court has heard.
Yi Feng, 38, of Kensington, pleaded guilty to assault through his lawyer at Waverley Local Court on Thursday.
According to court documents about 7.50pm on October 6 an argument between Feng and his wife about their shared business turned violent when he slapped her in the face.
The slap hit the woman “with such force [it] caused the victim to fall backwards and hit the kitchen bench”, the facts state.
Feng slapped his wife another 10 times, leading her to grab a kitchen knife to defend herself.
At this time a man on the street - who watched the events unfold from through a window looking into their home and recorded the events on his phone - called triple-0, and police arrived at Feng’s Kensington apartment to arrest him.
Feng was taken to Maroubra police station but declined to be interviewed, the facts state.
The court heard the chartered accountant, who earns about $800 a week, pulled the hair of a member of his family and punched another in the chest while in a drunken rage that saw him flee his house in an unrelated incident.
Feng’s lawyer requested his client be sentenced to a conditional release order to continue to receive drug and alcohol treatment, however the police prosecutor told the court she opposed a non-conviction because of the “seriously concerning facts” surrounding the charge.
“This is not a situation that warrants a non-conviction,” the police prosecutor said, noting the facts stated the alleged matter took place in the presence of children.
Feng’s lawyer told the court his client accepted he had been “quite intoxicated at the time” and had “caused his wife to be quite scared”.
He said Feng’s actions were “something quite out of character for him.”
“It’s something he deeply regrets,” the lawyer told the court.
Feng had undergone a drug rehabilitation program, the court heard.
Magistrate Ross Hudson told the court he would allow Feng to undergo further counselling and drug treatment before proceeding to sentencing and listed the case for October 26.
