Cult fashion favourite Uniqlo plans to open a store in Bondi Junction Westfield.
While a Uniqlo spokeswoman was coy about the new store, the Wentworth Courier can reveal a development application was lodged with and approved by Waverley Council last month for an $885,000 shop fit-out.
“ (We are) still in the midst of discussions so nothing is concrete yet,” said the spokeswoman.
Currently, eastern suburbs fans of the clothing juggernaut have to make the trek to Pitt St mall to visit a Uniqlo store.
The Bondi Junction offering will be Uniqlo’s ninth in Sydney with existing storefronts at Castle Hill, Hurstville, Hornsby, Miranda, Parramatta, Chatswood and North Ryde.
The apparel giant has made huge inroads into the Australian market reporting a 25 per cent growth in sales last year.
Uniqlo Australia’s gross sales increased by $63 million in the 12 months to August 31 to a whopping $306 million according to the company’s financial accounts which it lodged with the corporate regulator in December.
A number of other existing stores in Bondi Junction Westfield have taken the enforced time out during the coronavirus pandemic to either submit development applications or start construction on already approved plans.
On May 12 fashion powerhouse Zara gained approval for a $1.56 million overhaul of their spacious tenancy.
Both chicken chain Oporto and specialty tea retailer T2 got the green light on March 3 for renovations costing $200,000 and $180,000 respectively.
Fitness First was granted approval on March 2 for $730,000 in internal alterations, namely the removal and construction of partitions.
Bondi Junction Westfield newcomer, kids shoes store The Trybe which opened in December, got their $120,000 renovations rubber stamped in February.
In January, Tommy Hilfiger was approved for a $350,000 revamp.
While there’s less change coming to neighbouring Eastgate, Blooms Chemist was given the tick of approval on March 12 for a sizeable $444,000 renovation.
