An elite eastern suburbs boys school has issued a chilling warning to parents after a junior school student was allegedly approached by a man offering him a lift in his car.

Parents of children attending The Scots College in Bellevue Hill were told a ‘stranger danger’ incident had been reported less than 24 hours earlier.

Deputy principal Mr Graham Pattison, and preparatory school head Mr John Crerar issued an urgent email to parents on Friday afternoon, cautioning them about the incident.

About 4.50pm on Thursday afternoon a boy from the Preparatory School had been approached by “a man in a black sedan at the bus stop on Victoria Road,” the school stated.

“The man offered the boy a lift, which the boy rightly refused.”

The email informed parents the man had been described as in his 40s with short cropped hair and tattoos on his arms.

The Scots College said police had been advised of this incident.

The school further assured parents it would be taking “extra precautions” around the school vicinity following the incident.

“At no time should boys accept lifts or alternate travel arrangements from someone they do not know – strangers,” the school’s communication said.

“Any concerns about strange behaviour from other commuters should be reported to parents or carers and the College.”

A Scots College parent who asked to remain anonymous said he was pleased the school had informed its community quickly following the incident.

“It’s good that the school made us aware immediately, within 24 hours, so that we could actually do something about it and talk to our kids.”

He said he would be discussing the incident with his child to make sure they remained vigilant and were aware of the increased danger.

“It’s a public safety issue that people need to be aware about.”

The Scots College was contacted after-hours for comment.
