A Double Bay plastic surgeon facing 17 charges – including child sex abuse – has been served four AVOs ahead of a court appearance set for January next year.

Dr Richard Sackelariou, 68, of Vaucluse, was served the apprehended violence orders at Waverley Local Court on Friday.

Magistrate Ross Hudson told the court he understood the orders were to protect “children alleged to be listed in the charges”.

Mr Hudson confirmed the matter would return for hearing on January 17.

The specialist plastic surgeon is currently in custody, having been refused bail at Waverley Local Court on November 9.

Dr Sackelariou was charged with 17 offences including using a carriage services to procure someone under the age of 16 for sexual activity, cause child older than 14 and younger than 18 to do act of child prostitution, intentionally sexually touch child older than 10 and younger than 16 and have sexual intercourse with child older than ten and younger than 14.

The veteran surgeon of 40 years has practices in Sydney and Melbourne, and was arrested at his Vaucluse home and charged on November 4.

Police alleged in court the 68-year-old had travelled to the Newcastle region on several occasions to pay multiple girls between the ages of 13 and 17 to undertake sexual acts on him.

The court heard Sackelariou allegedly used the instant messaging service Snapchat, where he contacted the children under the alias “Alexandre Oret” and groomed them, including promising payment for their meetings.

The police prosecutor told the court Sackelariou would likely receive a “lengthy jail sentence” if found guilty and must remain in custody until sentencing.

The Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC) revealed to NewsLocal last week the commission was currently assessing an active complaint against the surgeon.

The surgeon’s Double Bay practice has been closed for appointments since his arrest, however he remains a registered doctor with state and federal agencies.

The matter is set to return to court on January 17.
