A Royal Australian Navy member charged with sexually assaulting a woman has been suspended from duty.

In early October, police charged Angus Ekberg, 27, with one count of sexual intercourse without consent in relation to an alleged assault in 2022.

Court documents state Ekberg allegedly had sex with a woman without her consent, and knowing she did not consent, at a Darlinghurst address.

The matter was mentioned briefly at Downing Centre Local Court on October 18 and adjourned for an update on the police brief on December 14.

Ekberg is yet to enter a plea to the charge.

The court documents also indicate Ekberg’s address at the time of his arrest by Kings Cross detectives was the Royal Australian Navy base HMAS Watson, in Watsons Bay.

A Defence spokeswoman issued a brief statement confirming Ekberg had been suspended from his duties.

“Defence is aware that a member has been charged with a sexual misconduct offence and is currently before the courts,” the spokeswoman said.

“There is no place for sexual misconduct in Defence – the member has been suspended from duty pending the outcome of the matter.”

The spokeswoman said it would be inappropriate for Defence to comment further while the matter remained before the court.
