A 19-year-old was minding his own business when a woman walked up and plunged a knife into his neck, a court heard.

The blade “nicked an artery”, leaving the man with a 10cm cut to his throat, Central Local Court heard on Tuesday.

Rachael Anne Martin, 42, appeared in court charged with the stabbing, appearing via audiovisual link in an Ole Miss sweatshirt and seemingly emotionless to the proceedings.

The teenager had been walking outside Kings Cross train station on Monday afternoon shortly before 1.30pm.

Martin’s lawyer Jonathan Wilcox appealed for bail on her behalf but this was denied.

The police prosecutor described it as a “completely unprovoked attack on an innocent member of the community unknown to the accused”.

Emergency services arrived about 1.30pm after receiving reports of a knife attack.

A young man was found on Darlinghurst Rd with a stab wound to the neck.

The man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a stable condition.

He remained in hospital on Tuesday.

Martin was arrested 50 minutes later on the corner of Macleay and Orwell streets in Potts Point.

She was taken to Kings Cross Police Station and charged with wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The police prosecutor told court Martin did everything she could to escape the scene and “hide what she had done”.

She went to Wayside Chapel, took a shower and disposed of the bloody clothes she was wearing, the police prosecutor added.

The incident was captured on CCTV, there were numerous witnesses, photos show Martin wearing the same clothes the offender was described as wearing, and there was evidence arising from the significant blood loss of the alleged victim at the scene, the court heard.

Martin will remain in custody until she returns to court on June 30.
