Moriah College flags plans to increase number of students by 20 per cent

An eastern suburbs school is seeking to increase its student numbers by 20 per cent in the coming years, proposing plans to help deal with the swell of traffic it is expected to create around the frequently congested suburb of Queens Park.

Moriah College is anticipating a significant increase in traffic around Queens Park, should plans to boost its student numbers by 20 per cent be approved.

The Orthodox Jewish School is hoping to add more students to the 1680 currently enrolled, proposing a masterplan that includes new science, arts and mathematics facilities, an independent learning centre as well as more open green space at its Queens Park Rd campus.

The school is expected to lodge the development application with the Department of Planning in the coming months.

“Our Queens Park campus requires an upgrade that aligns with our effective teaching methods and provides the modern, flexible and technology-rich spaces to prepare todays students for tomorrow’s world,” Moriah College president Stephen Jankelowitz said.

The school said redirecting the increased traffic away from residential areas on Queens Park Rd was “an important priority” though did not flag how that would be addressed.

The plans were sparked by what Moriah is anticipating as an increase in demand over the coming decades.

The move comes as the plans for a second public high school in the eastern suburbs remain in limbo, with no funds allocated in the NSW budget handed down last week.

Campaigners have lamented the need for more public school places in the east, with Rose Bay College currently sitting at maximum capacity.
