A Maroubra man alleged to have knocked out a 23-year-old on the night of a State of Origin clash will defend the allegations in court.
Matteo Grassi, 24, was charged with causing reckless grievous bodily harm in an incident at Matraville.
The alleged beat up – which took place following game one of the State of Origin – left the young man unconscious with head injuries.
Police allege in documents tendered to court that Grassi punched 23-year-old Trae Mason at about midnight on June 9 on Bunnerong Rd in Matraville.
Grassi was arrested after the discovery of the alleged victim on a Matraville footpath by police officers attached to Eastern Beaches Police Area Command about 1.30am.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man at the scene, later transporting him to Prince of Wales Hospital with a suspected fractured jaw.
As part of the investigation, police released images and a description of a man they believed could assist them in their inquiries.
On June 10 Grassi was arrested at a Maroubra home and taken to Maroubra police station and charged.
At Waverley Local Court on Wednesday the court heard four witnesses will be called to give evidence on the alleged assault, with the hearing to take one day.
The matter will be next mentioned at Downing Centre Court on August 17 for a hearing date to be set.
Detective Inspector Michael Capon said in a statement at the time of the incident police believed there had been a confrontation earlier between the injured man and a second male within a licensed premises following the State of Origin.
There was also an alleged confrontation on the street afterwards.
“There was [alleged] assaults while the victim was standing up and it appears he‘s sustained some injuries from the blow and also from the man striking his head on the footpath,” Det Insp Capon said.
