John Balafas: Bondi doctor allegedly contravened AVO by assaulting woman

An experienced Bondi doctor, recently convicted of assault and intimidation, has again attracted the attention of police following an incident at Dover Heights.

An experienced Bondi doctor, recently convicted of assault and intimidation, has again attracted the attention of police following an incident at Dover Heights.

John Balafas, 49, allegedly attacked a woman and in turn contravened an apprehended domestic violence order following an incident between Sunday and Monday.

He has been charged with domestic violence related assault occasioning actual bodily harm, stalk or intimidate, and contravene prohibition or restriction in an apprehended domestic violence order. No pleas have been entered.

The charges were mentioned at Waverley Local Court on Tuesday where he was granted bail by Magistrate Jacqueline Milledge, on the condition he reports daily to Waverley police station.

The 49-year-old is required to live in North Bondi while he mustn’t enter or go within 200m of an address in Dover Heights. Balafas must not drink alcohol or take drugs unless prescribed by a doctor and “police may test” him at time of reporting.

Unless through a legal representative, he is not to go near, or contact the complainant or any prosecution witness.

Just last month, Balafas was convicted on charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault, intimidation, and contravening an apprehended violence order.

Court documents said he threatened the victim with an axe and slammed it down on a table. He also punched the victim and smashed a glass on the person’s legs.

He was sentenced to an 18-month community correction order.

The new charges were adjourned to be mentioned at Downing Centre Local Court on July 5.
