A nursing student and former private school girl who threw a teenager to the ground, ripped her hair, clawed her face and then slammed her leg repeatedly in a car door outside a Bondi pub has escaped punishment under a mental health dismissal.
Gabriella Glazer, 22, was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm in February 2021 following a shocking incident days after her 21st birthday the year before.
Documents tendered to Waverley Local Court reveal Glazer and her victim were with separate social groups at Hotel Bondi on August 20 2020 when Glazer’s friend yelled “barnt, you f**king slut” at the victim.
A verbal argument ensued which saw both groups kicked out of the venue, and the argument continued on Campbell Pde.
“The accused lunged towards the victim shouting ‘let me get at her’ while swinging her arms, trying to punch the victim,” agreed police facts state.
“The accused then used both her hands and pushed the victim in the chest, causing her to fall backwards onto the ground.”
While the victim lay defenceless on the ground, police facts state Glazer climbed on top of her and held her down until the victim was able to get an arm free and hit Glazer in the face in efforts to escape.
“The accused has then taken hold of the victim’s hair, pulling at it while using her nails to scratch the victim on the right side of her face,” agreed police facts state.
“This caused the victim immediate pain.”
Two of the victim’s friends separated the pair, but as the victim ran for an Uber with her friends, Glazer came for her again.
“The victim entered the rear side of the Uber, but the accused has taken hold of the rear car door and began to slam it on the victim’s leg a number of times,” agreed police facts state.
“This has caused the victim immediate pain and bruising.”
Glazer faced Waverley Local Court on February 18, where her solicitor made a Section 14 application on her behalf.
A Section 14 application allows a court to dismiss charges under the Mental Health Act and discharge the defendant into ongoing medical and mental health treatment.
After consideration, Magistrate Les Brennan granted the order, discharging Glazer to continue weekly mental health treatment.
“She got into a verbal argument with some other people, then lunged towards the victim in a manner that was quite unwarranted,” Mr Brennan said
“It’s clearly violent conduct.”
Mr Brennan said a better outcome could be achieved with Glazer being treated by her three nominated medical professionals rather than being subjected to a supervised bond.
“The community would be better served by this order,” Mr Brennan concluded.
Glazer is a Bachelor of Nursing student at the University of Notre Dame who previously attended the exclusive Reddam House School in Bondi, which has fees of up to $32,000 per year for secondary students.
Through her lawyer, Jeannette Fahd of Just Defence Lawyers, Glazer said she was “positively moving forward with her life”.
