A beautician has been jailed after being caught with a stash of cocaine and cash following a planned dial-a-dealer transaction that went haywire at Bondi Beach.

Deana Marie Dicianni, of Pendle Hill, faced Waverley Local Court on Thursday for sentence after she pleaded guilty to supplying a prohibited drug and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

Magistrate Michael Barko sent the 31-year-old to prison for up to one year and eight months with a 10-month non-parole period.

“Police don’t have to work hard in Bondi, they just wait and watch. The offence took place around the corner from Bondi Police Station,” he said.

Court documents state undercover police patrolling the Bondi Beach area were targeting drug-related offences on March 14 when they found a man behaving suspiciously.

The man told police he had planned to purchase drugs from a woman, but they had an argument and the transaction did not happen.

He handed officers the woman’s number plate and they found Dicianni’s car parked nearby, police facts state.

Police raided the car, which led to the discovery of 26.7g of cocaine and $3900 in the car and in her possession, which included a wad of cash from her bra that she gave to officers.

At her court appearance, Dicianni’s lawyer Ben Barrack argued his client was given the bags of cocaine by an unknown man who told her she would receive $50 per bag before he distanced himself from her, placing her in the line of fire.

“She was dispensable and made an astronomically poor decision,” he said.

Mr Barrack said Dicianni was a bright woman with a medical science degree. He said the case was unusual because she was not a drug user.

Dicianni was supported in court by her mother and sister.

The court heard she had previously been placed on a community correction order in 2023 for the same offence.

Mr Barrack argued the offending took place in the context of a previous toxic relationship Dicianni had experienced.

“She was introduced to this drug environment by her former boyfriend and the circumstances of that relationship left her with an inability to remove herself from these destructive situations,” he said.

“She was experiencing PTSD and her judgement was clouded by fear, pressure and shame.”

Mr Barrack said sending her to jail would increase the likelihood of Dicianni reoffending as she was psychologically vulnerable and would develop negative associations.

Mr Barko said she already had negative associations and there was no way police could win the war on drugs with this type of offending.

“No one knows who she received the drugs from. Why do you think these people are walking around with a smile, driving luxurious cars and laughing?” he said.

“They give orders to the troops to commit suicide. You’re the one who can get shot and die. If it wasn’t for the soldier, the general wouldn’t succeed.”

Mr Barko said Dicianni knew she would be labelled a “dog” and her home targeted if she revealed who her negative associations were.

He also noted this was the second time she has offended.

“Now she’s come back bigger and bolder than ever,” he said.

Dicianni has since appealed the sentence and been granted bail, with a hearing date set for July 3 at Sydney District Court.
