Australia's growing drug crisis

A Sydney chippy turned Snapchat dial-a-dealer made an eye-watering amount of money in a few short hours peddling cocaine across Sydney’s ritzy eastern suburbs, police have said.

Alex Skinner, 22, pleaded guilty to supplying a prohibited drug and dealing with the property proceeds of crime after police tracked his movements and his customers.

Agreed police facts tendered to Downing Centre Local Court reveal police tracked the Five Dock carpenter and his Toyota HiLux from one drug transaction in Double Bay to another in Sydney’s CBD on May 1 this year.

“When asked why he was in Double Bay he stated he was dropping a mate off,” police stated.

“Police informed the accused that the male who was stopped down the road in Double Bay said he had purchased a bag of cocaine from him and the accused said ‘no comment’.”

Officers then searched the vehicle, and Skinner told them they could expect to find cocaine in his vehicle.

“When asked if he was selling, the accused replied ‘delivering’,” police state.

“Police located a container with four bags of cocaine, and a further two bags in the driver’s side door pocket.”

Skinner then told police they were separated into different parts of the vehicle because they were from different cocaine batches of differing quality.

Police also found $2850 cash in Skinner’s wallet.

“He had $300 before he started delivering and selling drugs,” police facts state.

“The accused showed (on his phone) a message chat on Snapchat with directions which included Double Bay and Sussex St.”

Skinner was ultimately found with 4.8g of cocaine and sentenced by Magistrate David Price to a 10-month intensive corrections order to be supervised by Community Corrections and undertake any recommended mental health treatment.

He is now appealing the severity of the sentence in the Sydney District Court on August 31.
