A 32-year-old Berrigan man has been charged after police recovered a large amount of jewellery and other items following a spate of alleged break and enters in the region.
Murray Police District believe the man broke into four homes in the Jerilderie and Tocumwal areas between April and June of this year.
Jewellery worth in excess of $1 million was stolen from one of the homes, police allege.
Police have been investigating the thefts, including whether there was any links between them, for some months.
Following inquiries earlier this month, police executed a search warrant at a home in Myrtle Park where they located power tools believed to be stolen.
They subsequently arrested the man at the intersection of Jerilderie and Bolton sts, Jerilderie, about 9.30am on June 10 and he was taken to Deniliquin Police Station.
During a search of the man’s vehicle, police seized a cattle prod that appeared to have been modified into a homemade electronic stun device, a machete and fuel believed to be stolen.
With assistance from Victoria Police, a further search warrant was executed at a home in Yarrawonga later the same day, where jewellery believed to have been stolen from a Tocumwal address was located and seized.
All items will undergo forensic examination.
The man was charged with 15 offences including aggravated break and enter, commit serious indictable offence, disposing of property, goods suspected stolen and break and enter of houses.
He was also charged with larceny and possessing a prohibited weapon without permit.
He was refused bail and appeared in Albury Local Court on Friday, where he was formally refused bail to appear in the same court on Tuesday August 9.
