Dear Val,
I am a 40 something woman looking to start dating maybe, online.
I am unsure where to start and what to do these days. I feel the online dating world is very false, but if I don’t go online then how do I meet a prospective partner in this day and age.
Dear 40-Something,
Dating in your fifth decade may feel daunting. There are more than likely be children in the picture and potentially a lifetime of romantic experiences with many exes left behind. Hopefully by now you have a clear picture of the type of partner you are looking for and know what you’re not negotiables are.
You won’t be as impulsive as Millennials or a Gen Z who tend to be looking for excitement online.
Dating online will be a new experience and it is understandable you will have some trepidation and butterflies. Not knowing what to expect could be confronting.
Find a dating site which suits you, then create a strong online profile that illustrates your best qualities and include a recent flattering photo.
Have a positive attitude about the experience without expecting too much and in turn you could meet someone great.
At worst you’ll end up with a story to chat about, you may find a new friend, or you may uncover the love of your life.
When you are ready to meet for a coffee or a drink suggest a venue, near to where you live. Remember don’t speak about money or religion or ask 20 questions but do look your date in the eye when speaking to him.
Finding a quality partner who is respectful, well mannered and honest means you may just have to think outside the box.
If online dating is just not your thing another option is to make it known to your besties that you would love to go to an event such as a sporting match, the ballet or theatre with them after COVID-19.
Actively being involved in fun activities will increase your chances of meeting someone new, likely with a common interest.
One of the most important things to remember is not to look desperate, nothing will turn your prospective date off more.
Further, relationships are all about compromise so do give people a chance.
Good luck in your quest to find a genuine guy and ultimately love.
