Detectives are hunting for two people suspected of stealing a ute that was then used to try and ram police cars during an “extremely” dangerous situation.
Police Inspector Adrian Telfer said a number of police cars had to take evasive action as the driver of the ute tried to ram them in the early hours of Tuesday.
“What we saw was a very rare event last night where a stolen motor vehicle attempted to ram a number of police officers in their vehicles to the point where it presented us with a very, very dangerous situation,” Inspector Telfer said.
“This was a targeted incident towards police officers.
“When this motor vehicle was in the vicinity of police, it took deliberate acts to try to harm us, which obviously we do not tolerate.”
Inspector Telfer said they believed it was two men who stole the ute, a white Toyota HiLux dual cab, from Turvey Park about midnight before driving it across Wagga on Tuesday.
Police went to look for the ute after its owner notified them.
“The owners had been aware that their vehicle had been stolen … they took it upon themselves to go search for it — they did locate shortly before 1am.”
“The stolen vehicle rammed their vehicle. It was obviously a really dangerous interaction as well.
“They weren’t hurt but obviously fairly shocked by the reaction.”
No police cars were damaged and no reports of injuries to officers were made.
Inspector Telfer said the officers’ bravery was commendable and that they were “calling upon all resources we have available to identify those responsible.”
The identities of the alleged offenders remain unknown.
The vehicle is a white 2011 Toyota HiLux with NSW registration BNF007.
