Harden, Militoni Veraqali Leweniqila accused of dangerous driving in bus crash to defend charges

The Griffith man behind the wheel of a bus which crashed and left numerous passengers hospitalised has pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving.

A bus driver accused of negligent and dangerous driving after a highway crash left nearly 30 passengers hospitalised is set to defend his charges.

Police stated about 8.15am on September 27 last year, emergency services were called to Burley Griffin Way in Harden after reports that a coach had crashed.

The coach had 28 adults and children including the driver, with 25 of the passengers transferred to Harden Hospital as a precaution.

Two other passengers were flown to Canberra Hospital. An 8-year-old boy sustained a fractured leg and a 65-year-old-woman suffered serious head injuries.

In Young Local Court on Tuesday before magistrate Michael O’Brien, Griffith man Militoni Veraqali Leweniqila had his pleas of not guilty to all charges formally entered via his solicitor.

The 58-year-old faces three counts of negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and two counts of causing bodily harm by misconduct while in charge of a motor vehicle.

The court set a May 19 deadline for the brief of evidence to be served on Leweniqila and his legal representative.

The matter is scheduled before the court again on June 2.
