Construction of a $100m residential and hotel apartment on the south coast will recommence after a court battle with the local council ended in the developer’s favour.
Core Asset Development (CAD) will restart construction of “The Sapphire of Eden” residential and tourist project in Eden, following a Land and Environment Court judgment in its action against Bega Valley Council.
Delays by the council’s officers in providing the various consents allowing the project to proceed on schedule resulted in CAD applying to the court for adjudication.
Last week, orders were granted for the developer to recommence works on Imlay Street.
Mark Toma, managing director of CAD said the team were ‘delighted’ to have the court approve their plans.
“We look forward to providing work for the local people and helping the region’s economic recovery after the bushfires and Covid,” he said.
“It is a shame we were forced to go to court to determine issues that could easily have been resolved with the council two years ago.”
‘The Sapphire of Eden’ plans
The construction of the four-tower project is expected to start up again late this year and generate more than 1000 local jobs and 80 ongoing positions in the hotel, residential towers and function centre, with completion expected in 2025.
The Sapphire of Eden project will feature a three-storey and a five-storey residential tower with a total of 86 apartments ranging from one to three bedrooms. It will also include a a heated pool, gym and barbecue areas in a fully secured precinct.
The towers have been designed by noted architects, Altis Architecture, taking in the 360 degree vistas of the local area and ocean.
CAD has also appointed international Hotel operator, Radisson Hotels to manage a five-star hotel and function centre, to be called Sapphire of Eden Hotel, in another tower on the site.
The Eden Fishermen’s Recreation Club has now been demolished and new project managers, called Construction Consultants Pty Ltd, have been appointed to oversee the works.
CAD has also successfully renovated and reopened the historic Australasia Hotel on Imlay street, featuring restaurants, outdoor eateries and a heritage bar called the John Hines Bar, with a distillery and outdoor theatre planned.
