A woman who went to bed after drinking five cans of Jack Daniel’s then, after struggling to sleep, went on a midnight drive which saw her collide with a parked car.
Brittaney Mas-O'Reilly, 24, of Sussex Inlet, faced Nowra Local Court on Tuesday where she pleaded guilty to high range drink driving.
Police documents tendered to the court reveal on March 27, Mas-O'Reilly drank five Jack Daniel’s cans and went to bed. However, she decided to go for a drunken drive about midnight
However, the “impulsive” midnight drive did not last long after she swerved and crashed into a parked car on Jacobs Dr, Sussex Inlet causing “significant” damage to both vehicles.
Police were called to the scene and spoke to Mas-O'Reilly, smelling the alcohol on her breath and observing she was unsteady on her feet, court documents state.
A breath test was conducted and returned a reading of 0.157. Mas-O’Reilly was arrested, before producing the same positive reading at the Sussex Inlet police station.
Mas-O’Reilly’s lawyer Mehmet Yilmaz told the court on Tuesday his client was “sorry for her actions”.
“This really is a one off offence for her and I doubt she will reoffend,” he said. “She has co-operated with authorities and has completed the traffic offenders program.”
Magistrate Lisa Viney said the midnight drive was a “silly, impulsive decision”.
“There was no need for you to be driving at that time, after that many drinks,” she said. “It was a silly decision to get behind the wheel. You didn’t have a criminal record, but now you’re walking out with one.”
Mas-O’Reilly was convicted, fined $1000, had her licence disqualified for six months. When the disqualification period ends, she will be required to have an interlock device installed into her vehicle for two years.
