A south coast town transforming from suburban homes to medium and high density apartments could soon see another suburb join in on the residential growth.
Surf Beach near Batemans Bay could soon see its first large apartment complex erected with a $2.9m three-storey, multi unit complex proposed for 660 Beach Rd.
The proposed development would see two separate buildings constructed on the block, each featuring four units.
In total, the development will feature six three bedroom, two bathroom units and a couple two bedroom and one bathroom units.
The proposed development was first submitted to the Eurobodalla Council back in 2019 and while applicant UrPlan Consulting declined to comment on the construction, a spokesman told this publication the delay was due to “red tape”.
“They just needed more information on the plans and there was just a lot of consulting,” the spokesman said.
“But hopefully now that ball will get rolling.”
The spokesman, along with the owner of the proposal, declined to comment further.
Architect documents tendered to the council application, however, reveal the building will sit at 11.67m high at its highest point.
The proposed construction joins a list of possible upcoming developments for the Batemans Bay area, including a proposed four-storey complex for the town’s CBD and a six-storey apartment set to replace a real estate firm by the water.
Former Eurobodalla mayor Neil Mumme, who also submitted an application to have an $11.5m apartment building constructed in the CBD, said it was time for the town to grow with its growing population.
“Batemans Bay is growing so rapidly and we’re running out of places for people to live,” he said.
“New constructions, new developments like this are a good thing and we are going to see them popping up a lot from this point.”
Batemans Bay LJ Hooker Realtor Karen Herrick agreed with Mr Mumme’s sentiment, telling this publication developments like the proposed Surf Beach complex were a good thing for the town.
“It’s nice to have developers coming in from other areas, it’s bringing a new category of buyers to the area we haven’t had before.”
Mrs Herrick said it was only natural due to the way the area was growing.
“We genuinely need it and it’s great to see more and more popping up in the right areas,” she said.
The proposed Surf Beach development will remain on public exhibition on the Eurobodalla Council website until September 15, 2023.
