An accused thief allegedly used a bank card nabbed during a Nowra break in to swindle more than $500 worth of cigarettes, gift cards and snacks.

The shopping spree was allegedly committed by Sanctuary Point’s Jayden Walker, who, police allege, used the Commonwealth Mastercard which was stolen from the victim’s home on the evening of August 30, this year.

Walker, 27, appeared in the Nowra Local Court on Tuesday - albeit two and a half hours late - charged with three counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by means of deception and possessing goods in custody suspected of being stolen. No pleas have been entered.

Walker is not charged in relation to the break in.

According to court documents, Walker allegedly used the stolen card on September 1 to purchase an array of items, including a packet of Winfield cigarettes, two flavoured milks, a Neosurf gift card and groceries from the Bomaderry Woolworths.

Each alleged transaction was below $100, meaning the card could be tapped without entering a pin.

Documents state Walker allegedly spent $504 before the victim noticed the transactions and cancelled the card.

On September 11, police visited Walker’s Sanctuary Point home, where he allegedly claimed the card was given to him by a friend.

However, the documents state he refused to name the said friend.

Walker was taken to the Nowra Police Station where he continued to refuse to name the friend, before allegedly admitting to police the card was used to purchase items, the court heard.

In court on Tuesday, Magistrate Lisa Viney found Walker guilty in his absence due to his lateness to court.

However, when he appeared hours later, the plea was withdrawn to allow for the self represented Walker to review the police documents.

The case was adjourned to October 1, where Walker is expected to enter pleas.
