A south coast father who lost his wife to cancer just five years ago is now facing something unfathomable – losing his 13-year-old daughter to the same vile disease.

A tight-knit community has come together to raise thousands for a father battling to save his little girl’s life from cancer, just five years after losing his wife to the same disease.

Nowra father-of-eight, Stewart Davison, is trying his hardest to help his 13-year-old girl, Dee Dee Davison, who has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukaemia just a week before her 14th birthday.

Mr Davison spoke to this publication about his daughter’s bravery and how the situation has turned his life upside down.

“I’m scared and unsure of what the future holds, but I know I must stay positive,” he said.

Dee Dee – who grew up and attends school in the Nowra region – was transported to Sydney’s Ronald McDonald house to start treatment, a day after her diagnosis this month.

She has remained in the Sydney-based children’s hospital since, with Mr Davison by her side.

For Dee Dee’s father, the diagnosis cuts even deeper, having lost his wife and the young girl’s mother to the same disease in 2019.

“All my children mean the world to me since their mum died,” Mr Davison said.

“I changed my life around to try be the best dad I can be for them.”

Family friend, Nicole Clifford, created a GoFundMe for the Davison’s, with the money raised to be used for hospital expenses and other costs to make their lives easier.

In four days, more than $5000 has been raised for the family.

Ms Clifford said Dee Dee’s diagnoses turned the family’s life upside down.

“Dee Dee is a beautiful young girl with a heart of gold,” she said.

“Her family is her life.”

Ms Clifford said the money donated would also allow the Nowra family to stay in Sydney alongside Dee Dee during her treatment.

“I’m asking for everyone to please help her fight the childhood cancer,” she said.

Mr Davison said he was amazed by the community support, labelling it “just awesome”.

“I can’t believe how much support from family and friends I have,” he said.

“I have so many beautiful messages and donations.

“It’s really humbling and just makes me feel so loved and supported in this sad, scary time.”
