A P-plater’s hunger after a boozy night – and morning – has ended up costing $1000, as well as six months off the road, after a breath test produced a high range blood alcohol reading.

Sam Greenhill, 23, of Worrigee, faced Nowra Local Court on Tuesday where he was pleaded guilty and was sentenced for high range drink driving.

Police documents tendered to the court reveal on March 25 at 2pm, Greenhill and his mate decided to go for a drive to get something to eat after a night of drinking.

Documents state the 23-year-old had continued drinking the day following the boozy night.

Driving along Larmer Ave, Sanctuary Point, Highway Patrol officers watched as Greenhill made a “speedy” and “dangerous” turn onto Sanctuary Point Rd, prompting the officers to pull him over.

After smelling alcohol on his breath officers conducted a breath test which returned a reading of 0.162.

At the Bay Basin police station, officers immediately suspended Greenhill’s licence after a second test was conducted.

Greenhill’s lawyer Mehmet Yilmaz told the court on Tuesday his client had been “punished enough” after the incident and loss of licence saw him lose his job as a tradie.

“He was about to get his truck licence, but since his licence was taken away after this offence, he can no longer do this,” he said.

Magistrate Lisa Viney recognised it was Greenhill’s first offence, but said it didn’t make it any less serious.

“You haven’t been driving long, so you’re not off to a good start,” she said.

“Not only had you been drinking the night before, but you chose to drink more the next day and then made the silly decision to drive.

“Not only are you walking out of here with a criminal record, but you’ve lost your job.”

Greenhill was convicted, fined $1000, had his licence disqualified for six months. When the disqualification period ends he must have an interlock device fitted to his vehicle for two years.
