A teenager accused of seriously injuring a 14-year-old boy in a hit and run collision on the state’s south coast has fronted court for the first time.

Ryan Carter, 18, has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving occasioning in grievous bodily harm and fail to stop and assist after impact occasioning grievous bodily harm in relation to the incident and appeared at Nowra Local Court on Tuesday.

Police allege on the evening of August 12, Carter hit the 14-year-old boy – who at the time, was riding a scooter – at the roundabout on Wallace St and St Annes St, Nowra.

However, Carter allegedly continued driving his white ute away from the scene after hitting the scooter rider.

Emergency services were called to the scene where NSW Ambulance treated the young teenager for leg injuries before he was taken to the Shoalhaven District Hospital.

The following evening Carter handed himself in to officers at the Nowra Police Station, where he was arrested, court documents state.

In court on Tuesday, Carter’s lawyer asked for his police bail – which the 18-year-old was granted the day after the alleged offence – be varied to only require him to report to officers one day a week, as he was originally required to report to police on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Carter’s lawyer noted his lack of a criminal record would be enough to allow the variation – a submission which was not opposed by Magistrate Lisa Viney.

“I note the serious nature of the (alleged) offending, but he has no criminal record at all,” Ms Viney said.

Carter’s bail was varied to only require him to report to officers on Thursday before his matter was adjourned for two weeks for legal advice.

The matter will return to Nowra Local Court on October 10.
