A Moruya barman whose drunken night out in Sydney landed him in a South Coast court has pleaded guilty to attempting to steal a valuable taxidermy wolf.

Reuben Nader was charged with stealing the large taxidermy Timber wolf from the top shelf of the Hyde Park House bar in inner city Sydney on January 24.

According to court documents, the 27-year-old had attended the bespoke venue with two friends after consuming several alcoholic beverages.

“At approximately 12.10am, the accused climbed on top of the bar shelving on the ground floor of the premises and took hold of the wolf,” the documents state.

“The accused then jumped off the bar with the wolf, falling onto the floor. The accused then stood up, still carrying the wolf, and ran out of the premises through the front door at speed.”

The Timber Wolf ornament, which is native to parts of North America, was purchased in London by the business owner in 2014. It was then worth about $14,000.

After seeing Nader fleeing with the wolf, a security guard grabbed hold of Nader’s jacket, causing him to fall to the ground, after which a scuffle ensued.

Sometime after, officers from the Kings Cross Police arrived at the scene.

Nader refused to provide any version of events, stating: “I don’t want to say anything stupid”.

According to the documents: “Police allege that the accused intended to permanently deprive the Hyde Park House of the taxidermy wolf, due to the steps he has taken to leave the premises quickly after stealing it, and his tenacity in by picking it up and attempting to run a second time.”

Appearing at Batemans Bay Local Court on May 23, Nader pleaded guilty to charges of larceny. An assault charge was withdrawn.

Nader’s solicitor told Magistrate Doug Dick that he would be unlikely to return to court, and that he accepted responsibility for his actions.

His conviction was not recorded and he was sentenced to a two year Community Rehabilitation Order. He does not have any previously recorded charges.
