The NSW Police State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will lead an investigation to the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of a man in Nowra on Saturday by officers following the stabbing of a Nowra mother-of-four.
Officers from the South Coast Police District were attending a unit on Albert St about midday when they were approached by Brett Walker, 27, wielding a knife, following a triple-0 call reporting a domestic violence-related incident, police allege.
Walker is alleged to have threatened police, at which point an officer fired upon him.
Officers on the scene conducted CPR until paramedics took over, but he could not be revived.
Mother-of-four Skye Cruickshank-Walker was found suffering from a stab wound to the neck and was treated by paramedics before being flown to St George Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Ms Cruickshank-Walker had only recently moved to the Shoalhaven, and was allegedly attacked by Walker, her new lover, inside her new Nowra home.
A relative of Ms Cruikshank said the mother-of-four was “very shaken up” by the ordeal but would be leaving hospital on Sunday to be cared for by her mother and sister.
“It’s really shaken the whole family,” he said.
The Daily Telegraph understands Walker had recently been released from prison in Victoria and had travelled to the Shoalhaven area with a friend a few weeks earlier, where he allegedly began a relationship with Ms Cruickshank-Walker.
Ms Cruickshank-Walker updated her Facebook account in mid-June to say she was “in a relationship”.
Another 25-year-old man believed to be her brother-in-law was also found suffering a stab wound.
He was taken to Shoalhaven Hospital in a stable condition.
NSW Police have established Strike Force Burin to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting under the State’s Crime Homicide Command.
The investigation will also be subject to an independent review.
