A Moruya teenager smashed his way into a popular south coast restaurant and after finding nothing to steal, threw some of the shop’s property out onto the grass.

Enrique Carriage, 19, faced Batemans Bay Local Court on Monday, pleading guilty to one charge of break and enter a dwelling with the intent to steal.

Police documents tendered to Batemans Bay Local Court stated that on October 27, Carriage broke into The River, a high-end restaurant in Moruya.

Just moments after the owner of the restaurant locked up for the night at 10pm, Carriage smashed the glass door in order to unlock it.

CCTV footage showed Carriage moving items around the entire restaurant.

“He was clearly looking for things to steal,” agreed facts stated.

Eventually, Carriage gave up having stolen nothing and left in the early hours of the next day.

However, before leaving, Carriage removed three window louvres and threw them in the grass outside.

Later in the morning, the owner arrived at the restaurant to discover the front door smashed, items moved all around the building, the glass sliding door damaged and the three window louvres damaged, laying outside.

Police arrived at the scene, where they dusted the window louvres for fingerprints which matched Carriage’s record.

About a week later, Carriage was arrested and became “aggressive whilst in the dock and began kicking the perspex causing it to crack,” agreed facts stated.

Carriage has remained in custody since, however, after having his matter mentioned in the Batemans Bay Local Court on Monday, he faced the Supreme Court the same day to apply for bail to rehab, which was granted.

The bail was granted on the grounds Carriage would attend rehab and not go near The River or attempt to contact the owner in any way.

Lawyer Matilda Bogart, said Carriage was hoping to change his ways.

“Rehab will help him do just that,” she said.

However, Magistrate Doug Dick said his criminal history would not work in his favour when sentencing.

“He is a young man and he has already been before the courts a number of times,” he said.

Mr Dick adjourned the matter for sentencing on May 15 in Batemans Bay Local Court.
