A young man who allegedly murdered his teenage cousin during a party on the south coast has had another bid for bail crushed by the courts.
Dominic Saliba, 20, faced Nowra Local Court on Tuesday, charged with murder, possessing an unauthorised firearm and not storing the firearm in a safe place.
The Nowra man is yet to enter pleas for the charges.
Saliba first applied for bail the day he was arrested and charged with allegedly murdering his 18-year-old cousin, Bailey Jones, at a party in Bomaderry.
Magistrate Lisa Viney, who refused the initial bail application in Nowra Local Court on December 23, promptly refused the second attempt at bail on Tuesday.
NSW Police stated on the evening of December 9, Mr Jones was found in the driveway of his Bomaderry home in a serious condition with a stab wound to the chest.
He was rushed to Shoalhaven hospital, where he died later in the night.
Initial reports from witnesses said it was a tragic accident as Mr Jones had been playing with a knife before he accidentally stabbed himself.
Then, more than a fortnight after the terrible event, police arrested and charged Saliba.
On the same day police arrested Saliba, Mr Jones was farewelled at a ceremony in Sydney.
In Nowra Local Court on Tuesday, Prosecutor Kingston recommended the matter be pushed back to June this year, due to forensic officers needing more time with reports.
Saliba’s defence lawyer, Helen Christinson was apprehensive to adjourn the matter by such a long time.
“I wasn’t expecting such an adjournment of that length,” she said.
However, Mrs Viney did not oppose the suggestion, noting the serious matter needed all details to be finalised.
Mrs Viney ordered a brief be served to the court by June 20 and adjourned the matter to June 23.
Saliba is expected to make a plea on this date.
