A woman, believed to be in her 80s, was killed in the crash and local plumber and surfer Ray Lawrence was flown to Canberra Hospital with multiple fractures.

Mr Lawrence from Narooma Plumbing was driving his work van northbound, when an elderly woman driving a sedan southbound swerved into the opposite lane, colliding with Mr Lawrence’s vehicle.

He remains in Canberra Hospital.

Narooma locals believe the crash was a result of a heart attack the woman suffered while driving.

“It’s just tragic,” Cassidy Adams said outside Club Narooma.

“We heard she was having a heart attack as she was driving, so the crash was no one’s fault.”

Another resident Boratt Reive said they also heard it was a heart attack.

“She had a heart attack and the van driver pretty much broke all his bones,” he said.

NSW Ambulance and the South Coast Police District said the cause of death would not be confirmed until investigations were completed.

“The exact cause of death is always confirmed by a coroner,” a South Coast Police District Spokesperson said.

The crash saw the elderly woman trapped in her car for some time, before being rescued by emergency services attending the scene.

Despite best efforts from paramedics, she died at the scene.

The Princes Hwy running through Narooma was closed in both directions with diversions in place, however it was reopened late Thursday night.

Locals said they had spent the morning discussing Mr Lawrence’s condition.

“We hope he’s okay,” Kamila Lee said.

“He’s a well-known plumber in the area.”

Another resident Blake Adams said “I heard he broke all his bones”.

“It was reported in the media that it was minor injuries, but my mates told me he apparently broke most of his bones,” he said.

Canberra Hospital would not comment on Mr Lawrence’s condition.

Some residents said the elderly woman may not had been a local.

“I’m not sure if she was a local,” Dorothy Carter said.

“If she was, it would be the talk of the town.”

A report is currently being prepared for the coroner.
