A man has died following a single-vehicle crash on a once-infamous road on the state’s south coast, months after the road reopened to traffic.

The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A man has died after his car left the road on a once-infamous thoroughfare on the state’s south coast this morning, only months after the road reopened to the public.

The man is believed to be in his 20s and was the sole occupant of the vehicle when it left the road on George Bass Dr, near Moruya at about 6.30am on Tuesday.

Police were told the Toyota Corolla crashed “heavily” into several trees.

The driver died at the scene.

Police report that his family are yet to be notified.

Officers from the South Coast Police District will investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The fatal incident comes only days after a teenager was flown to Canberra Hospital after a single-vehicle crash near Ulladulla.

George Bass Dr has been subject to a years-long renovation which sought to straighten bends in the road that were subject to frequent road accidents.

Those works are due to be completed later this year with only “finishing touches” yet to be done, according to the Eurobodalla Shire Council.
