A young man has been warned in court after he admitted to smashing a car window while “terrified” children sat in the vehicle on the NSW south coast.

Kevin Mason appeared in the Batemans Bay Local Court on Monday via video link from custody, pleading guilty to destroy or damage property.

The Kianga man applied for bail during his appearance, with the court hearing the details of his “violent” offence.

It was heard how the 22-year-old smashed the window of a car in the Eurobodalla region this month.

During his bail application, Mason’s lawyer Daniel Turner told the court that two children sat in the car while the window was smashed.

Magistrate Michael Love said the children would have been “terrified”.

The court also heard how the damage to the car will cost the owners $350 to repair.

Police were called to the scene where Mason was arrested, charged and initially refused bail.

However, Mason was not charged with any other offences other than destroying the car window – a factor Mr Turner pointed out during his bail bid.

He also submitted how Mason had adhered to community correction orders in the past without breaches, as well as noting this was the young man’s first stint in custody.

Mr Love said he hoped Mason’s week behind bars had taught him a lesson.

“You’ve had a good taste at what real jail is like,” he said.

Despite the “seriousness” of the offence, Mr Love said he would grant bail but wanted to be clear that the court would not hesitate to put Mason back behind bars.

“I’m giving you an opportunity to see if you can prove yourself and stay out of trouble,” Mr Love said.

“If you breach bail, you will be arrested.

“We will have no issues putting you back in jail.”

Mr Turner requested a sentencing assessment report be completed before Mason’s case returns to court.

Mason will be sentenced in the Narooma Local Court on December 12.
