Jack Blow: Bomaderry man convicted for drunken McDonald’s run to order Big Macs

After sinking up to 18 beers during a boozy night out, a P-plater decided to drive his pals to McDonald’s to indulge in some late-night Big Macs.

However, the satisfaction of his drunken feed would have been short-lived for 23-year-old Jack Blow after Bomaderry McDonald’s staff alerted police to the “drunk guy” driving in the restaurant’s drive-thru lane.

When police officers arrived it was “immediately clear” Blow was drunk, with the breathalyser soon revealing he was almost four times over the legal limit with a blood alcohol reading of 0.194.

The criminal behaviour of Blow on the night of May 11 resulted in the Bomaderry man facing Nowra Local Court on Tuesday on charges of high range drink driving and driving on a suspended licence, to which he pleaded guilty to.

Court documents state he told police officers he quickly conceded to police officers when they arrived at the McDonald’s carpark he had indulged in beers – between 15 and 18 Toohey News – and was likely to be “over the limit”.

After the positive blood alcohol reading he was taken to Nowra police station where further checks of his licence revealed it was suspended due to failing to maintain an interlock device which was installed after he was convicted for high range drink driving in 2020.

Blow’s lawyer Natasha Shirazi conceded her client had a “terrible criminal record” and told the court this was his second high range offence in three years.

“He has expressed shame and disappointment in himself,” she said. “I know this is a very high reading, but he informs me he has cut down his drinking since the offence and cut these friends out of his life, as they are bad influences.”

Magistrate Lisa Viney acknowledged Blow had been making moves to better himself since the incident, but she said a second high range offence was serious.

“Fifteen to 18 beers before driving is extraordinary,” she said. “How you thought you were capable of driving is beyond me.”

Ms Viney said the only appropriate punishment was a jail term served in the community.

Blow was convicted, sentenced to a 12 month intensive corrections order, had his licence disqualified for 12 months, fined $1000 and ruled to complete 100 hours of community service.

The P-plater will also need to have an interlock device installed for 48 months when his licence returns.
