Two children have been questioned by police after classrooms were damaged at a south coast primary school.

Police said an investigation is underway after they were called to Eden Public School at 5pm on Sunday following reports of people on the roof throwing rocks at windows.

Tables and chairs were overturned and paper strewn everywhere.

Officers from the South Coast Police District attended the school a short time later and found two boys inside one of the classrooms.

The boys fled the scene on foot towards Imlay Street, before police caught up with a 10-year-old at a nearby intersection.

A second boy, aged 13, presented himself to police in the presence of his parents a short time later.

Both boys are currently assisting police with inquiries.

A crime scene was established at the school, which has been closed for two days due to the extensive damage.

The NSW Department of Education said the school had reopened on Wednesday, and estimated the total cost of the damage and clean-up at $200,000.

“The school and the Department of Education has worked hard to clean up the damaged areas and ensure the safe return of students to their classrooms,” a department spokesman said.

In a statement the school advised students it would be closed on Monday “due to unforeseen circumstances”, and reassured the community the closure was not COVID-19 related.

The school was again closed on Tuesday to “ensure the premises are thoroughly cleaned and repaired to a satisfactory standard”.

“As the disruption caused by this event may make some children anxious, the school will offer counselling to students when classes resume this week,” the school said.

Investigations are continuing, police said.
