Shoalhaven Water has revealed plans for the future of the Danjera Dam Camping and Recreation area at Yalwal on the state’s South Coast.
A planning proposal, submitted to the NSW Government by Shoalhaven Council, includes plans for upgrades to camping grounds and picnic facilities for the site — which was closed by the council in December due to drought.
A council planner said the proposal would formalise the inclusion of camping at the popular watering hole at Yalwal Rd.
“The subject land has been used for camping and day use/picnic areas since the Danjera
Dam was constructed by council in 1971,” the planner said.
A 2015 planning proposal by Shoalhaven Water also called for the inclusion of camping at the dam site, however council scrapped the proposal the same year.
The planner said the proposal would “concentrate all camping onsite to one main campground”.
“A separate, but integrated day visitors/parking area is also provided,” the planner said.
“Associated improvements to pathways, amenities and picnic facilities have been provided.”
Work to the site will include a new river crossing at Yalwal Rd, the removal of existing camp sites and parking and the relocation of the camping ground further south — away from the dam wall.
Camping grounds will include 41 sites, approximately 100sq m n size, as well as a new multi-purpose building to be used as a 150-person refuge area, caretakers office, new amenities block and a garbage collecton area.
The Yalwal link road will be closed at the south of the camping ground.
The planning proposal will be determined by the NSW Planning Department before the plans are finalised by council.
