A man will spend the next few years behind bars after breaking into a NSW south coast home to attack the occupant in a shocking revenge plot.

Truin Cox, 41, was sentenced in the Nowra District Court on Tuesday, after bashing and choking a man.

The court heard it was a normal night for a Bomaderry couple, as the pair cooked dinner on the evening of November 11 last year.

However, late into the evening, Cox – who was known to the couple – came to their door and demanded entry. The Nowra man stated he had a grievance with the man.

The court heard Cox entered the home forcefully, before punching the man in the head.

Cox began choking him, forcing him to the ground while yelling “I am going to f--king kill you”.

The victim’s wife picked up a tomahawk, according to agreed facts, walking over to Cox and demanding he leave.

Cox complied, jumping off the man and fleeing the house.

The court heard the woman chased Cox, attempting to film him with a Samsung tablet to show footage to the police.

Agreed facts state Cox turned around and said “I’ll come back for you later, c--t”.

Weeks after the home invasion on December 5, Cox was arrested by police, charged and refused bail. He has remained in custody since.

Before Cox was sentenced, the woman gave a victim impact statement in court.

“He changed our lives forever,” she said.

“I don’t trust anyone anymore – dinner is a troubling time for us.

“I can’t cook now without looking out the door or making sure everything is locked.”

Cox’s defence barrister asked the court to consider his client’s “tough” upbringing.

However, the Crown prosecutor urged Judge Christopher O’Brien to note Cox’s prior offences and convictions for offences including assaulting police and break and enters.

Judge O’Brien said, given the seriousness of the offence, full time custody was the only appropriate punishment.

Cox was convicted and sentenced to three years and nine months in prison with a non parole period of two years and three months.

The sentence was backdated to the 41-year-old’s arrest, making him eligible for release on March 4, 2026.

“I’m hoping you can turn your life around,” Judge O’Brien said.
