A south coast man busted stealing a $750 bike days before stealing nearly $100 of food ranging from Smith’s Chips to Tim Tams, has been sentenced in court.
The “opportunistic” theft saw Adrian Grundy, 43, wind up in Nowra Local Court on Tuesday, pleading guilty to charges of larceny, shoplifting and having custody of a knife in a public place.
Documents tendered to the court reveal the Nowra man stole a grey Merida bike parked out the front of the Nowra Stocklands on the evening of March 26 this year.
Court documents state the 43-year-old man saw the bike’s owner and rider leave it out the front before entering the mall.
Grundy eyed off the bike for some time – according to CCTV later acquired by police – before mounting it and riding away.
The owner of the bike came out of the shopping centre to see it was gone, before reporting the matter to police.
Upon watching the shopping mall’s CCTV footage, police officers “immediately recognised [Grundy]” before attending the address on file for him.
However, agreed facts state upon arriving at the address, officer’s were informed Grundy no longer lived there.
An arrest warrant was put out for the Nowra man.
Nearly two weeks later police were called to the Ezymart located in the Central train station in Sydney, following reports a man was shoplifting a litany of items.
Upon arriving at the scene, police found the man described by witnesses sitting at a bench in the train station not far from the Ezymart.
Sat next to the man was a packet of Smith’s chicken chips, three packets of Allen lollies, two Mrs Mac beef pies, two Oak strawberry milks, two bottles of Coca Cola and a packet of Tim Tams.
Agreed facts stated the total amount of the stolen goods to be $98.
Police also located two folding knives in the man’s bag.
Police asked the man for his name and upon searching his identity, found it was Grundy from Nowra with an arrest warrant.
Grundy was arrested, charged and issued a court attendance notice.
In Nowra Local Court on Tuesday, Grundy’s lawyer Matthew Zappia said his client was dealing with a number of “significant” problems, ranging from health issues to addictions to drugs.
“My client has issues with addictions to methamphetamine and heroin,” he said.
However, Magistrate Lisa Viney said there was never any excuse for stealing items, specifically ones as valuable as the $750 bike.
Ms Viney also said there was never a need to carry weapons like knives in a public environment.
Grundy was convicted, sentenced to a 12 month community corrections order and fined a total of $1000.
