Family members say they are ‘devastated’ and can’t fathom what happened after a young woman was hit and killed by a bus at Adamstown.
Raani Bennett, 35, was walking her dog Bronson along Brunker Rd about 3.30pm on Tuesday when they were both struck at a pedestrian crossing by a school bus full of children.
Several passers-by who witnessed the incident jumped to her aid and tried to resuscitate her but there was nothing more they could do.
The school bus, carrying 17 students, also careered into multiple vehicles before it came to a stop.
Family members are now trying to deal with the tragic news, and rally around her young daughter.
Community members were equally devastated by the news. There was a pouring out of grief on social media, as people paid their respects.
“RIP, my heart goes out to the family,” one person said on Facebook.
A friend of the Adamstown local said he was devastated by the news.
Another local said she would always see her walking her dog through her street and seemed like a beautiful lady, with a gorgeous dog.
Following the incident, the driver of the bus was taken to John Hunter Hospital for further assessment and mandatory drug and alcohol testing.
Police are still trying to piece together what happened in the crash, as they try to determine the cause of a life tragically lost too young.
As investigations continue, police have gathered CCTV from several nearby businesses, while calling on any witnesses to the fatal crash to come forward.
On Tuesday, Newcastle police Inspector Shane Buggy said the traumatic scenes would have taken a toll on all those involved.
“Obviously an ordeal like that is quite stressful to those who were close by, to those who witnessed it,” Insp Buggy said.
Joel De’zuna, NSW Ambulance Inspector agreed it was a hard situation for everyone.
“It is an extremely traumatic scene for everybody involved and paramedics did absolutely everything they could to try to save the woman, but there was nothing we could do,” he said.
